A hard drive might be unsuccessful because of several reasons. Some of the general resons are illustrated below:

1) Head Crash : This is caused when the write or read head comes in make contact with the platter. This can cause the area where it has come in contact to misplace data.

2) Bad Sectors : The platter in a hard drive is dividing in minute areas termed as sectors. Sometime certain sectors may become out of order, this doesn’t influence the whole drive.

3) Stiction : Sometimes the head of the disk is not capable to take off; it tends to attach to its position. This observable fact is termed as stiction.

4) Circuit failure : The hard disk becomes not curable if any of its circuitry malfunctions.
