Signals are transmitted over the transmission media which are broadly classified in two categories as:-
a) Guided Media:
It provides a channel from one device to other which includes coaxial cable, twisted-pair and fiber-optic cable. A signal which is traveling through any of these media is directed and is restricted by the physical limits of medium. Twisted-pair and coaxial cable use the metallic which accept and transport the signals in form of electrical current. Optical fiber is a glass or plastic cable which accepts and transports the signals in form of light.
b) Unguided Media:
It is the wireless media which transport the electromagnetic waves without utilizing the physical conductor. Signals are transmitted either through the air. This is done through the satellite communication, radio communication and the cellular telephony.
