Secure Hash Algorithm (or SHA), the algorithm specified in the Secure Hash Standard (or SHS), was intended by NIST and published as the federal information processing standard (or FIPS PUB 180). SHA-1 was a revision to SHA which was published in the year of 1994. The revision corrected the unpublished flaw in SHA. Its design is extremely similar to the MD4 family of hash functions intended by Rivest.
