Respiratory pigments are the molecules which is present in blood which binds to the oxygen transporting it to the tissues. In vertebrates respiratory pigment is hemoglobin, its reddish color is due to the presence of iron in its composition. In crustacean and arachnid arthropods and in some molluscs respiratory pigment is hemocyanin, its color is blue due to the presence of copper in its composition. Annelids have hemerythrin, hemoglobin, and chlorocruorin as their respiratory pigments.
