Explain why the application like POP is required for the electronic messaging?

Workstations interact with SMTP host that accepts the mail on behalf of each host within the organization, to access the messages by using the client-server protocol just like Post Office Protocol, version 3(POP3). Though, the POP3 is used for the purpose of downloading the messages from server, the SMTP client still requires the desktop to forward the messages from workstation user to its SMTP mail server.
