The substance which stimulates the production of red blood cells through the bone marrow is known as “erythropoietin”. Erythropoietin refers to a hormone which is released through the kidneys. Its secretion is improved when there is poor tissue oxygenation caused due to decreased availability of oxygen (since, it takes place at high altitudes) or through the internal diseases, like in pulmonary diseases.
