The runtime supports Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, NT4 SP6a, Windows 2000 and Windows ME/98. Though, Windows 95 is not supported. Some of the parts of framework do not work upon all platforms – such as, ASP.NET is only supported over the XP and Windows 2000/2003. Windows 98 /I may not be used for development. IIS is not supported over the Windows XP Home Edition, and thus does not be used to host the ASP.NET. Though, the ASP.NET Web Matrix web server runs on the XP Home.
The .NET Compact Framework refers to the version of.NET Framework for the mobile devices, which is running on Windows CE or the Windows Mobile. The Mono project has the version of .NET Framework which runs over the Linux.
