Within this mode, 11 bits are transmitted (through the TXD) or received (through the (RXD): a start bit (0), 8 data bits ( LSB first), the programmable 9th data bit and the stop bit(1).
On transmit the 9th data bit may be assigned the value of 0 or 1. On receive the9th data bit enters the RB8 in the special function register SCON, however the stop bit is ignored. The baud rate is programmable to either the 1/32 or 1/64 oscillator frequency.
