Thyroid secretes the hormones thyroxine (or T4), triiodothyronine (or T3) and calcitonin.
T3 and T4 are iodinated substances which are derived from amino acid tyrosine. They act to raise the cellular metabolic rate of the body (that is, cellular respiration, metabolism of proteins and lipids and so on). Calcitonin inhibits the discharge of calcium cations through bones therefore controlling the blood level of calcium.
