An appeal must be requested within a certain time limit, usually within 30 days after the trial court renders its decision. The person who challenges the decision of the lower court is the appellant, and the person who defends the original decision is the respondent. The appellate court (appeal court) decides whether a mistake was made in the trial court. Normally, appeals are heard by at least three judges. The judges hear and read arguments from the parties as well as the lawyers but don’t hear receive evidence or witnesses. Generally speaking, appeal courts accept the findings of fact of the trial judge and reconsider only the application of the law.
