Digestion in protozoans is an intracellular digestion: organic material is internalized and degraded within the cell.
Protozoans get food through phagocytosis and then the food is digested whenever phagosomes fuse with lisosomes in the cell, making digestive vacuoles. The digestive vacuoles give origin to residual bodies which are removed from the cell by exocytosis.
