Gas exchange in pulmonary alveoli
Explain the physical process which accomplishes gas exchange in the pulmonary alveoli?
Expert
The gas exchange within the pulmonary alveoli happens through the simple diffusion in favor of partial pressure gradient. When oxygen partial pressure in the inhaled air is greater than that the oxygen partial pressure of capillaries of alveoli, the air penetrates to the circulatory system. If the partial pressure of oxygen in air is lower (an uncommon situation as the blood which reaches the alveoli is venous blood) the oxygen exits the circulatory system. This is same for the carbon dioxide.
