Gas exchange in fishes
How gas exchange is done in fishes?
Expert
Fishes are able to ‘breath’ through the gills. Gills, or branchiae, are extremely vascularized organs which are specialized in the process of gas exchange under water and present in the aquatic animals (crustaceans, marine annelids, fishes and tadpoles). Gills are respiratory organ (analogous, for instance, to the lungs) containing extremely thin lamellae along with several evident blood vessels which are in the direct contact with water. In osteichthyes, gills are enclosed by the bony flap which protects them termed as operculum while in chondrichthyes operculum is not there.
