Fish epidermis is really very thin and consists of the mucus-secreting cells. The fish skin never contains keratin. The mucus consists of the protective function and it too helps in sliding of animal under the water. The fish scales initiate from the dermis and not from epidermis. In the amphibians, there already exist slight keratinisations of skin, perhaps an additional adaptation to the terrestrial environment. Amphibians consist of smooth and wet epidermis without any scales. These characteristics provide their cutaneous respiration.
