POP employs Transmission Control Protocol onto port number 110. Transmission might be encrypted by using Transport Layer Security (or TLS) or Secure Sockets Layer (or SSL). This is negotiated in POP3 protocol by using the STLS command. Some servers and clients, like Google Gmail, in its place use the deprecated alternate-port technique, which employs TCP port 995 (or POP3S).
