Explain the term vestibular system
Explain the term vestibular system? How does it operate?
Expert
The vestibular system is the portion of the ear which participates in the control and regulation of equilibrium of the body (or balance).
The semi-circular canals of inner (or internal) ear are perpendicularly positioned and detect modifications in the gravitational position of the head (that is, this is the other sensorial function of inner ear, besides auditory perception). Whenever the head rotates the pressure of fluid within the canals on the cilia of specific receptor cells differs and such cells generate action potentials transmitted by the vestibulocochlear nerve. Neural impulse is then interpreted by brain as information regarding gravitational position of the head.
