Data unit introduced at the application layer is known as the message, at the transport layer data unit produced is known as either a segment or the user datagram, at the network layer the data unit generated is known as the datagram, at the data link layer the datagram is summarized in to the frame and finally transmitted as signals all along the transmission media.
