Arthropods encompass compound eyes made of numerous visual units called ommatidia. Each ommatidium spreads visual information through optic nerve to brain, which interprets image.

Since they are round and numerous, such ommatidia, whose external surfaces point in dissimilar directions making independent images, cause arthropod eyes have a huge visual field, larger than the visual field of the vertebrates. Some insects have more or one simple eye besides their couple of compound eyes.
