Cytochromes are proteins of the inner mitochondrial membrane which are specialized in electron transfer and contribute in the respiratory chain. Energized electrons released by the hydrogen donors FADH2 and NADH2 (then retransformed into FAD and NAD) pass via a series of cytochromes losing energy in each and every passage. The energy is then utilized in the synthesis of ATP.
