DTD (or Document Type Declarations) and XML Schemas. An XML document which conforms to its DTD is known as type-valid. A document can be well-formed and not be type-valid, either since it violates the structure of its DTD or since it has no DTD. But, DTDs have limitations and to overcome these limits XML Schemas were created. XML Schemas are XML documents are the favored technique for defining document structure.
