Containment was the policy of US which stated that any attempt to spread communism would be seen as a threat to the democratic nations of the world and this gave them a reason to fight with that nation.
The Marshall Plan began so that by lending money to European nations, USA was making a point that those European countries would not follow the path of Communism. This would make them strong.
