The procedure in which DNA is synthesized containing template as a RNA chain is termed as reverse transcription. The cell infected by retroviruses (RNA viruses, similar to the AIDS or SARS viruses) reverse transcription takes place and DNA is made up from information contained in the viral RNA.

Viral RNA in the host cell generates DNA with the aid of an enzyme termed as reverse transcriptase. Based on that DNA, the host cell then forms viral proteins, new viruses are gathered and viral replication takes place.
