In case of impulse turbine the steam is expanded from high to the low pressure in one stage only. This results in the high speed of the rotor. Practically, the high speed of rotor affects the parts of the turbine. Therefore, the speed should be controlled. In order to reduce the speed, the steam at high pressure is expanded in many stages. It is said to be Compounding .
