It is a special program which processes statements written in a specific programming language and turns them into machine language or "code" which a computer's processor uses. Typically, a programmer writes language statements in a language like Pascal or C one line at a time using an editor. The file which is created contains what are called the source statements. Then the programmer runs the appropriate language compiler, specify the name of the file which contains the source statements.
