In 1982, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms became part of the Constitution. The Charter places limits on numerous aspects of government actions and protects human (versus property) rights. It is significant to note that the Charter which does not describe property rights (the right to own and enjoy assets) or economic rights which means the right to carry on business activities certainty "let the conclusion stand", even though the courts contain retained for themselves a considerable amount of flexibility while still formally accepting the authority of their prior decisions.
