The main cells of xylem involve tracheids and the vessel elements. The tracheids and the vessel elements are the dead cells which have lost their cytoplasm and only their cell wall saturated with the lignin (an impermeable biopolymer) remained. The tracheids form the tubes which communicate with the neighboring tubes through the pores; the vessel elements do not have pores but however they communicate with successive vessel element through perforations in their extremities.
