Metabolism consists of two opposing processes: catabolism and anabolism. Anabolism refers to the set of synthesis reactions that transform the simpler compounds into organic molecules in general with energy spending. Catabolism refers to the set of reactions which break the organic molecules into the simpler and less complex substances in general with the liberation of energy. The energy liberated in the catabolism can be used in the vital processes of organism, including the anabolism.
