For restoring Active Directory, a non-authoritative restore is the default method. In order to perform a non-authoritative restore, you have to be able to start the domain controller in Directory Services Restore Mode.
An authoritative restore brings domain or a container back to the state this was during backup and overwrites all changes made since the backup.
