Assessment : Reflection on experiences with people with dementia (1000 words )

Context

As a health professional it is likely that many of your patients will be suffering from dementia or confusion. You may already have experience with people with dementia either directly in your clinical placements or in with older members of your own family or indirectly through the media.

Task

Using Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle, write a reflection on an experience you have had with older people with dementia or in a confused state.

Detailed Instructions

1. Your reflection should include the following:

a. Introduction (approx. 100 words)

o introduce topic, situation & Gibb's Framework

b. Description(approx. 150 words)

o location

o context

o what happened

o your role in the event

o the result

c. Feelings (approx. 150 words)

o feelings experienced at the time,

o feelings about the outcome

o any change in your feelings (i.e., on reflection)

o what internal (e.g., beliefs, etc.) and external (e.g., other people) influenced/caused the feelings;

d. Evaluation (approx. 150 words)

o what was positive and negative about the experience?

e. Analysis & critical appraisal (approx. 150 words)

o what was constructive

o what contributed to unplanned outcomes for the event

o what knowledge or theory was helpful for understanding this?

f. Conclusion (approx. 150 words)

o identify what you have learned from this experience

o discuss what you could have done differently

g. Action Plan (approx. 150 words)

o discuss what you would do next time and any other actions you could take (including further reflection, if necessary).

2. Language & style:

• Use first person (I felt, I noticed, I thought...)

• Use full sentences and paragraphs. Do not use dot points.

• Do not use abbreviations, contractions (e.g., isn't), or slang.

• Tense:

o Use past tense for previous events.

o Use present tense when relating a previous incident to current practice, making general comments, or referring to literature.

o Use futureconditional (I would) when speculating about what you might do in the future.

3. Use APA 6 formatting & citation style

4. Your proposal should include reference to at least 5 recent (past 5 years) and credible peer-reviewed references.
