Assignment
Every student will have the opportunity to show the ability to connect class material to real world events, the purpose of this paper is to encourage you to think critically and express your ideas.
To write this essay, do the following:
1. Pick an article related to American government and politics from a reputable news source. Articles must be substantive (generally at least four paragraphs) and should not deal with sports, entertainment, or gossip. The article can address local, state, national, or global issues (as long as the U.S. is involved). If you have any questions about whether or not you have picked a good article, you can always e-mail me and ask!
2. Read the article thoroughly to make sure you fully understand what is being discussed.
3. Write a paragraph summarizing the article. This paragraph should indicate where the article is from and what the issues are (include any relevant factual information), but try to paraphrase in your own words instead of relying on direct quotes. Remember that any paraphrased material or direct quotes must be cited. There is a citation guide on the Titanium site that you can use as a reference.
4. Write a paragraph(s) connecting the article to class material. Does the article deal with a constitutional issue? An act of congress or the president? Does it relate to federalism? There are many issues which could relate to multiple chapters so pick the one that makes most sense to you and explain it in the context of what you are learning in class. For example, if it's an executive order you could discuss what an executive order is, the historical role of the presidency etc. Just make sure you clearly connect the article to something you have learned in the class. 5. Finally, write a paragraph(s) giving your assessment of the article. Make sure to include specific points about what you do and don't agree with. Find at least one point in the article that you agree with and explain why you agree. Find at least one point in the article that you do not agree with and explain why you disagree. Avoid vague statements like "I think it's good." Why did you pick this article? What about the article interests you? Why do you think this issue is important? How has your opinion changed after reading this? Did the article make you want to take action? What would you say if you were trying to persuade a friend about this issue? What evidence would you use to convince them that you are right?
6. Proof read your paper! Read it out loud to yourself or a friend! Writing is a very important skill and you will be evaluated not just on the quality of your content, but the quality of your writing.
Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
1. The answer should be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
2. The response also include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
3. Also Include a reference page. The Citations and references should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
