Which has a lower social economic status

Discussion Post

This is student discussion post. Read and write a post back in response to what is writting. Do not use this discussion for future writing. 1-2 paragraph is enough. Adding to the discussion is great.

I believe that one of the greatest impacts on future health is the overwhelming increase in obesity. "Adult obesity rates have continued to increase steadily since the turn of the century, rising from 30.5 percent in 199-2000 to 39.6 percent in 2015-2016, a record high." (McCarthy, N., 2017) Currently younger children (2-19 years old) are also suffering from obesity, have increased to 18.5 percent. (McCarthy, N., 2017) Obesity can increase the risk of Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, depression and increased risk of cancers. The risk of obesity is especially high in those who have lower social economic status.

In my community, which has a lower social economic status, obesity is a concern, along with the risk factors that come from obesity. In my community, there is also increased health risks due to smoking, those who are obese, and smoke are at a much higher risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. "It is estimated that about 27% of the increase in health care spending between 1987 and 2001 was related to obesity, and about half of this cost was paid for by Medicare and Medicaid." (Nies, M.A. & McEwen, M., 2015)

In my practice, I can attempt to teach patients who have a higher BMI, about weight management. In our hospital there is a free service for those who have undergone chemotherapy treatment to manage weight, which includes meeting with a dietician and coming up with an exercise program. With continued work, the epidemic of obesity, through education about foods and exercise, can hopefully start on a downward trend instead of the continued upward trend.

The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
