1. A train derailment results in one tank car emptying its contents of liquid nitrate fertilizer into a small river. One mile downstream from this spill the river is dammed to form a reservoir that provides hydroelectric power and a drinking water supply for a nearby town. There is a water treatment plant for this reservoir water. So, what are the environmental and health risks that must be dealt with and how would you mitigate them? (do some research and cite sources).
2. You are the fire chief of a town near an interstate highway. A call comes in from the state police saying that a truck carrying ten, 1-ton chlorine cylinders has gone off the road and all these containers rolled off. The driver is injured. Answer these questions:
A) What do you tell the state police to do?
B) What precautions does your department take when responding?
C) The location of this accident is several hundred yards from the exit to your town. Do you alert residents and how?
D) What characteristics of liquid chlorine as well as geographic and weather conditions affect your response if one or more cylinders might be leaking?
