For this assignment you will be reviewing an academic journal article.
An article review examines a scholarly article's strengths and weaknesses as well as overall intention (further research, replicate previous research, address gaps in research, etc). Your review should include a description, paraphrasing the information the author is presenting, and your own analysis. The goal of this is to provide an analysis to help readers assess the article's value without having to read the articles.
To write a review properly, you should read the article twice, the first time to understand the intention of the article, and the second time to analyze. Your review should include a clear introduction that includes an argument about whether the article is valuable and successful at what it has set out to accomplish. Your body paragraphs should include central ideas as listed below and should be supported with evidence from the article (direct quotes or paraphrasing using proper APA citation). The concluding paragraph should restate your thesis and summarize the larger ideas you presented.
• What should be included in your review:
• Background information about the author- What are the author's credentials? Are they established in their field? Have they written about this subject more than once time? Are they in an academic institution or private industry?
• Organization- Does the author organize the article with relevant headers and sub-headers? Does the presentation of the research findings follow logically? Does the author have a concise title that describe the study?
• Central argument or idea- What is the main thesis statement or argument? Does the abstract accurately describe the study? Who is the author writing for? What is the purpose of the writing? Is theory used to apply to the author's research? Does this theoretical application make sense or does it seem farfetched?
• Literature Review- Does the author provide a synthesis of literature that discussed the topic problem at hand? Does the author point to gaps in the literature review they hope to address? Does the literature review summarize all the necessary information that is relevant to the author's own research?
• Facts versus opinions- What information is the author's own ideas or opinions? Are these opinions supported by evidence, research, or fact? Is the author persuasive in their argument? Does the evidence support the argument (is it logical and does it relate directly to the thesis statement?)
• Methodology- Is there a clear methodology used? Is it appropriate for this type of research? Is the author transparent in how they conducted their research- would the study be replicable (can someone else easily repeat the study?)
• Findings- Does the author present their research findings in a clear, concise, and understandable way? Do these findings relate to the real world or are they specific to a certain population?
• Conclusion- Does the author include a future research section? Does the article include research implications (how can this research be used or is further research necessary)
