Statement of Facts: This is a commonsense explanation of the case. You are telling a story that happens to be made up of facts. Your statement of facts should be relatively short and concise.
Issue: What issue(s) is the court asked to consider? Be careful in stating this. The issues are usually very specific and narrow in scope.
Holding: What did the court decide? The holding will only address the narrow issue that was addressed in the case. This is written in a short narrative.
Reasoning: This section will test your understanding of the case. This should be written in your words. You will state the case law or statute used by the court and explains how it applies the case law or statute to the case in question. Your reasoning should be easy to understand and complete.
Action of the Court: What did the court do? Did the court affirm? Was the case returned for further consideration? Was the sentence overturned? Be careful! Include accurate information.
