Ordinary construction is very common. While everyone sees it, few realize that the structure is essentially a wooden building with some form of masonry walls as support. As a building inspector or official, or even a fire marshal or officer, you may have to review the plans for the renovation of one of these structures. The difference in the types of mortar over the years has also caused a number of historic buildings to fail.
Take the time to look around and note the number of these old buildings that have tie rods, pointing with new mortar that cannot possibly match the mortar of the original, and also take a very good look at the number of alterations and remember that they usually do not reinforce the foundation. In this essay, what changes would you recommend in preplans and safety procedures with one of these old structures?
