What are possible effects for the local labor markets

Assignment:

Economic impacts of Amazon's HQ2

Scenario: Working with the same group of analysts please develop an economic impact study of the recent announcement of Amazon's HQ2 location in New York and Virginia.

You may focus on both locations or one specific. This is a brief report to be distributed to policy makers and broader public across the nation. Journalists will read it and write their reviews, so please maintain reserved academic tone as writing. Pay attention to formats and other details from previous exercises. For example, look up some models of such reports by The Center For an Urban Future https://nycfuture.org/research Your task: develop an objective analysis of the current proposals.

You need to consider both positive and negative impacts on the economy (e.g. labor markets, small and other businesses, any particular industries,), society and culture (community impacts, education, infrastructure, public services, etc.). Your work MUST BE data/evidence driven. Please rely on primary sources for data as much as possible (look up the background doecuments).

Some, but not all, structural hints:

1. What are the actual plans in each case?

2. What are possible effects for the local labor markets? Will all workers gain? Is employment guaranteed? Will wages go up for all and by how much?

3. Has anything similar happened elsewhere in the U.S.? How are things in Europe or other locations? What about Google's expansions in NYC and elsewhere?

4. Does any of this have any spillover effects into other industries and why and how?

5. What do local communities stand to gain?

6. How does all of that fit in the urban economy model?

7. What is the city's administration's policy towards the new HQ plans and will/how it might change?

8. Please note there are other relevant questions, your goal is to construct a complete and informative picture answering the main questions: economic, development, social, cultural, political impacts of the new plans.

Format: 1000 to 2500 words (NOT more), Times New Roman 11 or 12-point font, 1.5- spaced, one-inch margins on all sides; at least seven external data/publication sources.

The MUR MUST have a title, three bullet point summary, an introduction, main part and a concluding section. You may embed references as hyperlinks to save space. References must follow consistent format (e.g. Chicago manual of style). Figures/Tables must be properly cited (see Writing Guides).
