There are three basic factors which cause the urban sprawl. First of all is the market factors. The American urban sprawl is a consequence of the market economic system. The market power dominants the economic development and urban development. In the face of market-oriented "large society", more people believe that the intervention effect of "small government" is limited. Secondly is policy factor. Because of the leading role of market factor, the government begin to follow the market. That makes an enhanced effect of urban sprawl. The last factor will be the sociocultural factor. According to the American society, people dreams to own the abundant land, resources and private property. That results the historical and cultural root of American urban sprawl. Since the 1950s, people were facing the big urban problem in the central district of the big city. Some of the middle class in Western society began to pursue the comfortable living environment in suburban areas. The rapid development of the other countries make the suburban dream of the middle class came true, which was the sociocultural factor of the urban sprawl.
