Structural modification in the plant


Angiosperms that is, flowering plants are the biggest Phylum in the Plant Kingdom (Angiospermophyta is as well termed as Anthophyta or Magnoliophyta. These plants encompass true roots, stems, leaves and flowers. The roots grow to the soil to anchor the plant in place and take up nutrients and water. The leaves are above ground and act as the major organs for photosynthesis. Stems give above ground support for the plant and operate as conduits to move nutrients and water all through the plant. Flowers include the female and male reproductive organs of the plant.

With such anatomical features in mind, do some research to find out an angiosperm which has modified leaves, stems, roots or flowers that don’t function in the normal manner or that function in an unusual way? Illustrate: A California Barrel Cactus has spines in place of leaves to decrease water loss.

Describe how this structural modification helped the plant adapt to its environment. Make sure the plant you select is an Angiosperm. For illustration: plants like pine trees, mosses and ferns are not Angiosperms.
