Skill text and learning diary of business management

This module has a two part assessment process, Part A and Part B.

Part A: Skills Test

You will be issued with a skills audit grid covering in detail the areas of knowledge and understanding, cognitive skills, practice/professional skills relating to learning outcomes 1-4:

1.)  Review and assess their own skills/qualities, strengths and weaknesses with regard to study skills and particular aspects of working with people.

2.) Collect evidence of a plan for self improvement.

3.) Reflect on personal performance in order to demonstrate learning from this experience.

4.) Demonstrate appropriate communication skills in order to achieve given objectives

In the early stages of the programme you will be required to complete the skills audit grid, the personal SWOT and PDP. This will be submitted within the formative portal that will be available on ilearn at the specified submission dates found within the timetable. Please note this is a formative piece of work and will not count towards your final grade, but you cannot proceed to Part B - the marked element of the assessment process - until Part A has been successfully completed. The skills audit grid, SWOT and PDP templates can be found under assessment information on ilearn.

Part B: The Learning Diary

You will be expected to produce a learning diary showing evidence of skill development. This evidence can be in the form of appraisals, tutor feedback, course attendance certification or any other form of evidence agreed with the module tutor.

The learning diary should be 5000-6000 words in length, excluding appendices, and should be structured as follows:

  • Title page
  • Acknowledgements
  • Table of Contents
  • Personal profile
  • Current position
  • Initial PDP including a SWOT and the completed skills audit template, plus reviews and revisions made during the period under consideration. The section should also include Monthly Development Plans.
  • Weekly diaries - these should be summarised to capture relevant detail and how it is related back to the personal objectives on the PDP
  • Reflective statement on management development activities and appropriate evidence to support your statement
  • Additional resources or learning materials that have been relevant to the preparation of the PDP
  • Appropriate indexing and cross-referencing

Additional Notes:

The word count excludes the title page, executive summary, reference list and appendices. Where assessment questions have been reprinted from the assessment brief these will also be excluded from the word count. ALL other printed words ARE included in the word count. Printed words include those contained within charts and tables. See 'Word Count Policy' in My Resources for more information.

You must ensure that the submitted learning diary is all your own work and that all sources used are correctly attributed. Penalties apply to learning diaries which show evidence of unfair academic practice. (See 'Dealing with Plagiarism' in the student handbook).

You MUST underpin your analysis and evaluation of the key issues with appropriate and wide ranging academic research and ensure this is referenced using the Harvard system (See 'Referencing Guide' in the Study Skills Guide in My Resources). You must use the Harvard referencing method in your assignment. Your assessment should be submitted as a single word or pdf file. For more information please see the "Guide to Submitting an Assignment" document available on the module page on ilearn.
