Part I

Essay on International human rights

Is your academic essay or report between 1300 and 1500 words? (Look at the bottom left of your Microsoft Word page to see the number of pages and number or words in your document).

Format: Is your assignment formatted in a respected, readable font (type of lettering) such as Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri or Cambri? It should be no smaller than 12-point font size.

Addressing the criteria 1: Is it clear which current international human rights breach you addressed?

Addressing the criteria 2: Did you examine the effects of this international human rights breach on individuals and groups involved?

Addressing the criteria 3: Did you report on responses to the breach?

References: Have you included text references for the source of every quote in your assessment? Are they formatted correctly according to the APA Style?

Your essay or report must be between 1300 - 1500 words (not including your bibliography and in-text references) and should:

  • Incorporate the feedback you received on your draft
  • Examine a breach of contemporary human rights at an international level
  • Examine the impact on groups or individuals involved
  • Report on responses to the breach
  • Use formal report or academic essay format
  • Be correctly referenced (with in-text references and bibliography) according to the APA style
  • Include a bibliography that contains at least five items.

Part II - Oral presentation

STANDARD ASSESSMENT EVENT 1 (SAE 1) - ORAL PRESENTATION Method and Conditions of Assessment

Method of assessment

An oral presentation that:
- clearly explains human rights issue at the national level
- presents and discusses the differing viewpoints surrounding the issue includes a written summary of the presentation
- includes a response to the audience.

Conditions of Assessment

The presentation must be 10-15 minutes in length.

A written summary of 250 words minimum and bibliography of at least 5 items must accompany the oral presentation.

Three (3) items from the bibliography must be annotated for reliability, relevance and usefulness. Each annotation is to be no more than 50 words in length.

Learners must use more than one form of media in their presentation.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion in which the learner will respond to questions from the audience.

The format of the oral presentation is to be negotiated between the teacher and student.

This SAE is weighted at 40% of the total marks for this unit.

Guidance for assessment

Learners may need assistance if presenting via technology eg. videoconference, computer conferencing programs.
