Point mutation on protein synthesis

Suppose that the protein synthesis always reads all along a chromosome three bases at a time to code for each and every successive amino acid in a protein. There are two types of point mutations, a base substitution, and a base deletion. Explain how are these two kinds of mutations likely to influence the protein coded for by a mutant gene?
