Implementing operations management in the public sector

The purpose statement establishes the intentions of a study (Creswell, 2014). The article, "The Role of Management Consultancy in Implementing Operations Management in the Public Sector (Radnor and O'Mahoney, 2013)," starts off with a clearly stated purpose, introduced by offering what the research sought to accomplish. Simply put, the purpose was to explore "the growing influence of management consultants on operations management methods and the increased use of such methods in the public sector (Radnor and O'Mahoney, 2013)." The purpose statement mentioned both the participants and the research site while also framing the problem.

This is a qualitative study that focuses on "influence" of implementation, highlighting operations and process management by consultancies who do both public sector and private organization to understand if the interventions are applied differently (Radnor and O'Mahoney, 2013). I think this study focuses on the idea that there is a gap in research on the influence public sector consultancy utilization and the question is if they work on the private sector, what kinds of constraints undermine usage.

Considering that the overarching goal here is to improve public sector operations management, this is a real-life problem looking for a real-life solution. That is what research is all about. Research isn't for the sake of thinking up things to study, but to create meaningful change. Research such as this study could be used to change policy or introduce measures to fund consultancy if it is seen to improve operations management, for example.

Applied on a more personal level, I believe that research is given more purpose when the outcomes can be viewed as something that would make a substantive contribution to society, whether it be a small group of people, an organization, the community or the world. I believe that under these circumstances, research gives way to a passion to make a difference by being the change or change agent that is being sought. For example, I want to protect the well-being of 9-1-1 emergency dispatchers by understanding what stressors they have that affect their engagement and effectiveness. It's so broad, but at the core is not only the effect on recruitment and retention, but the impact on the community who call 9-1-1 to get help from a potentially disgruntled and disengaged employee. How do we protect those who are avowed to protect others?

I think that as I begin narrow down my theory, research problem, and purpose for my dissertation, my strategy will be to align it around a central idea. It will be as least ambiguous as possible so that the research problem directs the purpose and subsequently answers the research question (Babbie, 2017). Upon evaluating the assigned article, I believe the authors did that.

I was given the article this week that was about the domestic violence surveillance. The purpose of this article was to look at the idea of having GPS used on the defendants of a domestic violence case. I think this article was very straight forward with the purpose statement for this article. The research for this the GPS surveillance was took look more into the styles of GPS that can be used. This domestic violence issue and cases is something that is a huge problem in the US. The issue only seems to continue to get worst so there is something

Looking at the article I was able to see the different sections of the paper. In those sections I was able see how the research was going to be presented. The order for this article research was the purpose statement was read in the first portion. As the article goes on you can see the research problem. Then we can see the theory of what the results will be. Also, with this article the method used would be qualitative research. The idea of this is see what the effect of this would be if this method was used going forward. In the article there was also the conclusion and the results that were gained from this research.

When it comes to the relationship and social change I think these are two things that can go hand and hand. We all have some issue that we see on a daily in our lives that we want to get changed. So, as we move forward with learning how to conduct the correct research and finish the final stages in the program we must also think about how can use what we have done. If must take the information and results to change those issues that we want to change.

After evaluating Lindblom article "The Science of 'Muddling Through'"(1959) I believe that it meets the requirements for the purpose statement according to the checklist. As a qualitative study his research focuses on the bureaucratic choice process as a jumble yet at the same time taking care of business method (Lindblom, 1959). Lindblom basically says that a reasonable or specialized approach isn't conceivable, and he offers an option and a clarification of why the scorned political moving of authoritative decision-making may not be as awful as it shows up (Lindblom, 1959). The theory, problem, and purpose of this article were based on when the article was composed and was the prime of logic. In this article he describes the root method, which requires comprehensive evaluation of options in the light of defined objectives (Lindblom, 1959). The branch method involved building out, step-by-step and by small degrees, from the current situation (Lindblom, 1959). Lindblom claimed, "The root method is in fact not usable for complex policy questions". The practical man must follow the branch approach the science of muddling through (Lindblom, 1959). Lastly I believe that in order to have social change, research needs to happen. I believe that good and positive change happens when you take the time to research the issue at hand. Making social change in a country where there are plenty of different social circles would require an extensive amount research so a positive outcome could be reached for everyone.
