1. Outline the legislative context for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety
2. Outline the diversity of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures in Australia
3. Describe the historical, social, political and economic issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people including:
a) Impact of European settlement
b) Loss of land and culture
c) Racism and discrimination
d) Past and present power relations
4. Describe the concept of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety in community services, and its relationship with:
a) Cultural awareness
b) Cultural competence
5. Develop strategies to improve Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples cultural safety, covering the following:
a) Communication techniques that show respect
b) How and when the use of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander interpreters as cultural brokers, will be utilized
c) How to support effective partnerships between staff, Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander people and their communities
d) Identify resources and how they can be utilized to promote partnerships
e) How to deliver services and programs that are culturally safe and encourage participation, including how to encourage self-determination and community control.
6. Evaluate ways to improve communication with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples who may be clients or colleagues, covering the following:
a) How will you ensure that cultural safety strategies are measurable?
b) How will you involve Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in evaluations and revising strategies based on evaluations?
c) How will you evaluate the programs against the desired agreed outcomes?
