Higher mortality rate and risk factor

A high value of serum cholesterol is though to be the risk factor for heart diseases. The national cholesterol education program of national institutes of health in 1987 stated that the recommended value for serum cholesterol is below 200mg/dl and the value between 200 and 240 is considered to be borderline. A value above 240 may indicate the problem and NCEP  recommended that the lipoprotein analysis must be performed. Based upon these data it appears that many non hispanic whites have serum cholesterol values that ate too high, particulary woem. The medical literatureis as well finally beginning to recognize homocysteine is a very significant risk factor for heart disease, even among people with normal levels of serum cholesterol

a. Provide some possible reasons why non hispanic white males have hihger mortality from heart and cerebrovascular diseaes when it appears from these data that non hispanic whie females must have the higher rates.

b. Give a possible explanantion why the serum cholesterol values for older males are lower than for youger males and reverse is true for females.
