Genetically modified crops are cultivated on more than 250

Genetically modified crops are cultivated on more than 250 million acres of land worldwide. Currently, 88% of corn, 93% of soybeans, 90% of canola, and 94% of cotton grown in the United States is genetically modified. Even tilapia have been genetically modified to favor males, which makes them mature and achieve larger sizes faster, and allows them to survive on less food. However, there are conflicting opinions about genetically modified foods.

Some scientists think they are perfectly healthy and are no different from the selective breeding that farmers have been doing since the beginning of farming.

Other scientists disagree; they point out that we don't know all the possible outcomes of eating these foods, or the potential consequences of modified genes getting loose in the environment. Conduct additional research about genetically modified foods.

  • What do you think about genetically modified foods?

• Currently, foods aren't required to be labeled if they are genetically modified. Do you think foods should be labeled? Why or why not? Are you surprised to learn how much of our food supply is genetically modified? Why or why not?
• Pick a specific genetically modified food or organism and explain what has been changed. Be sure to outline the steps used to make the genetically modified organism you chose.
