"Thanks to the bridge across languages provided by subtitles, Chinese film is the popular cultural vehicle most accessible to audiences outside China. Parodoxically, the movies that have been most successful in capturing international awards and attracting international audiences are least successful in the Chinese market and least acceptable to the Chinese authorities."
