Dna polymerase synthesizes complementary nucleotide


Dna polymerase synthesizes complementary nucleotide strand in 5' to 3' direction, why does their have to be a lagging strand, can't dna polymerase just synthesise the new strand in the opposite direction, starting from the other end, why does it have to be discontinuous?
