1. Search the Internet for information on a recent construction-related fatality. Share what you found, and discuss some of the probable causes of the incident.
2. Discuss the challenges of implementing an injury and illness prevention program on a large construction site. Do you feel that compliance with OSHA standards is all that is necessary? Why, or why not?
3. Most construction worksites are required to have a competent person for many different operations. In your opinion, is it a best practice to make the worksite safety professional that designated person? Why, or why not?
4. Recall a time when you or a member of your household did a home improvement or repair project. Were you (or they) in compliance with the standards for use of tools? What could have been done to make the job safer?
5. Ladders are likely one of the most misused pieces of equipment in construction and at home. Share with the class a time when you (or someone you know) experienced a ladder-related fall or close call. What standards that were not followed can you identify in the incident?
6. Research the Internet for information on a recent crane accident. What possible violations of OSHA construction standards can you identify that might have contributed to the accident? Share your information in this journal assignment. (Include a link to the accident information).
7. Hazard communication (Hazcom) training is required in all workplaces where hazardous chemicals are used (not just construction). What has been your experience with Hazcom training? Did it meet the standard? Was it effective? If you have never participated in Hazcom training, discuss who you think should provide this training on a construction site.
