Assignment:

Language Development Assignment

Thus far, we have learned about different methods for collecting data that informs our understanding of language development.

Now, we are going to get some practice reading some research articles, and then applying this knowledge in a way that could be used to support parents, teachers, and their children's language development.

For this assignment, you will

a) Read 2 to 3 research articles from a preselected list of articles.

b) Summarize the research methods and the findings of each article.

c) Analyze and synthesize the findings and meaningful information across your selected articles.

d) Create an artifact that uses the information and presents it in a way that could be disseminated to parents or teachers as a way to help support language development.

e) Reflect on the process and artifacts created.

Article Selection, Summarizing, Synthesizing, and Analyzing

You will be provided with the pdf versions of a number of research articles all related to language development. You will need to download 2 to 3 research articles and annotate them.

While you can decide which articles you will use, your best bet is to select articles with some similar themes or topics to help you with synthesizing and summarizing.

Summarizing the Articles: For each article, you will need to

1. Annotate and take notes on your article.

2. Provide an overall summary of

a) what the article is about,

b) the methods used in the study, and

c) the major findings, conclusions, and key take-aways of the study.

Synthesizing and Analyzing the Articles: After you have summarized the studies within each article, you will need to analyze and synthesize the articles, bringing the ideas and conclusions presented in each article, together. In this section, you should provide a cohesive description of how, as a whole, these articles are important and help push our understanding of language development forward. Then, discuss how the findings from these studies can help inform parents and/or teachers who work with young children. You can also discuss questions you had or concerns you found with regard to the study methods, conclusions, etc.
