Cost of Living
The City of St. Albans has a unionized police force that is coming up for a contract renewal. The police have one issue: the cost of living increases. During the past 10 years, police officers have received minimal cost of living increases, and this time they want to match what other police forces are making. They claim that their salaries are below the national level. The incoming new police hire earns a salary of $48,200. Using the websites provided in the research section, prepare data and an argument on behalf of the police officers to support their position (from textbook).
This assignment will be written as a PowerPoint slide show presentation (PowerPoint Tips). Approach it as if you are giving the presentation to governing board of the City of Albans. You are trying to persuade the board that the police officers need a raise. Your proposal should be:
1. 8 to 10 power point slides
2. The note section of the slides should be used to explain the slides.
3. At least two recent and credible sources in addition to the textbook must be used.
4. All sources must be cited using APA formatting.
5. Charts, tables, graphs, etc., may be used.
6. The first slide should be a title slide.
You are a worker in a fast growing, large, non-union manufacturing organization. You notice persistent systematic labor violations in the plant. The company has multiple locations in the United States and plants in China and France. People are complaining about the working conditions and wages. A group of your fellow workers are talking about the need to fight back. There seems to be a willingness to organize. You have decided to seek the help of a Union. Write the following information in proposal format. Remember to follow APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center and to cite at least three scholarly sources in addition to the course text.
1. Describe the union organizing process.
2. Identify the union you would choose to help you organize and explain why.
3. Describe the the responsibilities of the workers.
4. Describe what the unions can do to help labor.
5. Explain what management can legally say and do when they learn an organization movement is in progress.
6. Explain what can be done to help the workers overseas organize.
7. Explain why the global nature of the business does or does not influence the organization and bargaining process.
